"De 27ste editie van Cinema Novo heeft het de jury niet gemakkelijk gemaakt. Geheel in de traditie van dit festival, verruimde het programma onze blik. Geen van de negen films in competitie viel meteen af. De film die de vijf juryleden na een discussie van een paar uur hebben gekozen, charmeert vanaf zijn openingsbeelden: een feesttafel die met uiterste zorg wordt gedekt.

De bekroonde film pakt uit met een kristalhelder scenario en fijne humor die gezien het thema niet voor de hand ligt. Het hoofdpersonage maakt, na de zelfmoord van zijn ex-vrouw, een waarachtige evolutie door, zonder ooit in vals sentiment te vervallen. Onder milde maar dwingende regie van de overledene erkent hij haar als zijn grote liefde en brengt hij de ruziënde nabestaanden bijeen. Het titelpersonage van de film is daarbij even nadrukkelijk aanwezig als afwezig. De regisseur is de kijker de hele film lang een stapje voor.

Om al deze redenen verleent de jury de eerste prijs van dit festival aan Cinco días sin Nora van Mariana Chenillo.

De jury geeft een meer dan eervolle vermelding aan 10 to 11 van Pelin Esmer om zijn originele onderwerp, weerbarstige hoofdpersonage en poëtische hommage aan het veranderende Istanbul."

Judging the 27th Cinema Novo edition was a daunting task. Upholding the tradition of the festival the films widened our outlook. None of the nine competitors was dropped from the outset. After a couple of hours’ discussion the five members of the jury picked the film which charmed from the very opening: a meticulously set festive table.
The prize-winning film's script is crystal clear and has some fine humour, which is not self-evident given the theme of the film. After his wife's suicide the main character is undergoing a real evolution without ever lapsing into cheap sentiment. Under the mild but strict direction of the deceased he acknowledges her as the love of a lifetime and brings the quarrelling siblings together. Throughout the film the main character mentioned in the title is both present and absent while the director always is a step ahead of the viewer.
For these reasons the jury awards the Camera Novo Award to Cinco días sin Nora by Mariana Chenillo.
An honourable mention goes to 10 to 11 by Pelin Esmer because of the originality of the theme, the main character’s stubbornness and the poetic homage to a changing Istanbul.
