Camera Novo Award 2010 - Jury Report
"Judging the films of the 27th Cinema Novo edition was a
daunting task. In the tradition of the festival the films widened
our outlook. None of the nine competitors was dropped from the
outset. After a couple of hours’ discussion the five members of the
jury picked the film which charmed from the very opening: a
meticulously set festive table.
The prize-winning film's script is crystal clear and has some fine
humour, which is not self-evident given the theme of the film.
After his wife's suicide the main character is undergoing a real
evolution without ever lapsing into cheap sentiment. Under the mild
but strict direction of the deceased he acknowledges her as the
love of a lifetime and brings the quarrelling siblings together.
Throughout the film the main character mentioned in the title is
both present and absent while the director always is a step ahead
of the viewer.
Therefore the jury awards...
... the Camera Novo Award to Cinco días sin Nora (Nora's Will) by Mariana Chenillo.
- An honourable mention goes to 10 to 11 by Pelin Esmer because of its original theme, the main character’s stubbornness and the poetic homage to a changing Istanbul."
Amakourou Award: Young Jury Report
Norteado (Northless) wins
"After five hours of convincing and being convinced we chose a winner. It turned out to be a close tie between 10 to 11 and Norteado. This is the story of a young Mexican Andres, who is set on crossing the Mexican-American border. The Young Jury was deeply moved by the doggedness of a man pushed to the extreme in his search for a better life. He lands up in a godforsaken village close to the border, where everybody has a story to tell, including Cata, Ela and Asensio. Together they come up with a cunning –and a amusing plan- to smuggle Andres into America.
Rigoberto Pérezcano knows only too well...
... how to picture Andres' emotions. The photography and music
complete the overall picture and give this film an edge.
By the way, we enjoyed all nine competition films."
An honourable mention...
...of both Juries goes to 10 to 11 - Turkey, by Pelin Esmer
